  2. Using the Synchronization Client
  3. ================================
  4. .. index:: navigating, usage
  5. The ownCloud Desktop Client remains in the background and is visible as an icon
  6. in the system tray (Windows, KDE), status bar (Mac OS X), or notification area
  7. (Linux).
  8. .. figure:: images/icon.png
  9. :alt: Status icon, little cloud with green circle and white checkmark
  10. The status indicator uses icons to indicate the current status of your
  11. synchronization. The green circle with the white checkmark tells you that your
  12. synchronization is current and you are connected to your ownCloud server.
  13. .. figure:: images/icon-syncing.png
  14. :alt: Status icon, little cloud with blue circle and white semi-circles
  15. The blue icon with the white semi-circles means synchronization is in progress.
  16. .. figure:: images/icon-paused.png
  17. :alt: Status icon, little cloud with yellow circle and vertical parallel
  18. lines
  19. The yellow icon with the parallel lines tells you your synchronization
  20. has been paused. (Most likely by you.)
  21. .. figure:: images/icon-offline.png
  22. :alt: Status icon, little gray cloud with gray circle and three horizontal
  23. white dots
  24. The gray icon with three white dots means your sync client has lost its
  25. connection with your ownCloud server.
  26. .. figure:: images/icon-information.png
  27. :alt: Status icon, little cloud with letter "i" in white circle
  28. When you see a white circle with the letter "i" that is the informational icon,
  29. so you should click it to see what it has to tell you.
  30. .. figure:: images/icon-error.png
  31. :alt: Status icon, little cloud with red circle and white x
  32. The red circle with the white "x" indicates a configuration error, such as an
  33. incorrect login or server URL.
  34. Systray Icon
  35. ------------
  36. A right-click on the systray icon opens a menu for quick access to multiple
  37. operations.
  38. .. figure:: images/menu.png
  39. :alt: the right-click sync client menu
  40. This menu provides the following options:
  41. * Quick access to your accounts
  42. * Sync status
  43. * Recent Changes, showing latest activities
  44. * Settings
  45. * Help menu
  46. * Pause synchronizations
  47. * An option to log in or log out of all of your accounts at once
  48. * Quit ownCloud, logging out and closing the client
  49. A left-click on your systray icon opens the desktop client to the account
  50. settings window.
  51. .. figure:: images/client6.png
  52. :alt: Account settings window
  53. Configuring ownCloud Account Settings
  54. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  55. .. index:: account settings, user, password, Server URL
  56. At the top of the window are tabs for each configured sync account, and three
  57. others for Activity, General and Network settings. On your account tabs you
  58. have the following features:
  59. * Connection status, showing which ownCloud server you are connected to, and
  60. your ownCloud username.
  61. * An **Account** button, which contains a dropdown menu with **Add New**,
  62. **Log Out**, and **Remove**.
  63. * Used and available space on the server.
  64. * Current synchronization status.
  65. * **Add Folder Sync Connection** button, which is active only when you have
  66. removed synchronization on an account (see **Remove Sync** below).
  67. The little button with three dots (the overflow menu) that sits to the right of
  68. the sync status bar offers four additional options:
  69. * Open Folder
  70. * Choose What to Sync (This appears only when your file tree is collapsed, and
  71. expands the file tree)
  72. * Pause Sync / Resume Sync
  73. * Remove folder sync connection
  74. **Open Folder** opens your local ownCloud sync folder.
  75. **Pause Sync** pauses sync operations without making any changes to your
  76. account. It will continue to update file and folder lists, without
  77. downloading or updating files. To stop all sync activity use **Remove
  78. Folder Sync Connection**.
  79. .. figure:: images/client-7.png
  80. :alt: Extra options for sync operations
  81. .. note:: ownCloud does not preserve the mtime (modification time) of
  82. directories, though it does update the mtimes on files. See
  83. `Wrong folder date when syncing
  84. <https://github.com/owncloud/core/issues/7009>`_ for discussion of this.
  85. Adding New Accounts
  86. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  87. You may configure multiple ownCloud accounts in your desktop sync client. Simply
  88. click the **Account** > **Add New** button on any account tab to add a new
  89. account, and then follow the account creation wizard. The new account will
  90. appear as a new tab in the settings dialog, where you can adjust its settings at
  91. any time. Use **Account** > **Remove** to delete accounts.
  92. File Manager Overlay Icons
  93. --------------------------
  94. The ownCloud sync client provides overlay icons, in addition to the normal file
  95. type icons, for your system file manager (Explorer on Windows, Finder on Mac and
  96. Nautilus on Linux) to indicate the sync status of your ownCloud files.
  97. The overlay icons are similar to the systray icons introduced above. They
  98. behave differently on files and directories according to sync status
  99. and errors.
  100. The overlay icon of an individual file indicates its current sync state. If the
  101. file is in sync with the server version, it displays a green checkmark.
  102. If the file is ignored from syncing, for example because it is on your
  103. exclude list, or because it is a symbolic link, it displays a warning icon.
  104. If there is a sync error, or the file is blacklisted, it displays an
  105. eye-catching red X.
  106. If the file is waiting to be synced, or is currently syncing, the overlay
  107. icon displays a blue cycling icon.
  108. When the client is offline, no icons are shown to reflect that the
  109. folder is currently out of sync and no changes are synced to the server.
  110. The overlay icon of a synced directory indicates the status of the files in the
  111. directory. If there are any sync errors, the directory is marked with a warning
  112. icon.
  113. If a directory includes ignored files that are marked with warning icons
  114. that does not change the status of the parent directories.
  115. Sharing From Your Desktop
  116. -------------------------
  117. The ownCloud desktop sync client integrates with your file manager: Finder on
  118. Mac OS X, Explorer on Windows, and Nautilus on Linux. (Linux users must install
  119. the ``owncloud-client-nautilus`` plugin.) You can create share links, and share
  120. with internal ownCloud users the same way as in your ownCloud Web interface.
  121. .. figure:: images/mac-share.png
  122. :alt: Sync client integration in Windows Explorer.
  123. Right-click your systray icon, hover over the account you want to use, and
  124. left-click "Open folder [folder name] to quickly enter your local ownCloud
  125. folder. Right-click the file or folder you want to share to expose the share
  126. dialog, and click **Share with ownCloud**.
  127. .. figure:: images/share-1.png
  128. :alt: Sharing from Windows Explorer.
  129. The share dialog has all the same options as your ownCloud Web interface.
  130. .. figure:: images/share-2.png
  131. :alt: Share dialog in Windows Explorer.
  132. Use **Share with ownCloud** to see who you have shared with, and to modify
  133. their permissions, or to delete the share.
  134. Activity Window
  135. ---------------
  136. The Activity window contains the log of your recent activities, organized over
  137. three tabs: **Server Activities**, which includes new shares and files
  138. downloaded and deleted, **Sync Protocol**, which displays local activities such
  139. as which local folders your files went into, and **Not Synced** shows errors
  140. such as files not synced.
  141. .. figure:: images/client-8.png
  142. :alt: Activity windows logs all server and client activities.
  143. Server Notifications
  144. --------------------
  145. Starting with version 2.2.0, the client will display notifications from your
  146. ownCloud server that require manual interaction by you. For example, when a
  147. user on a remote ownCloud creates a new Federated share for you, you can accept
  148. it from your desktop client.
  149. The desktop client automatically checks for available notifications
  150. automatically on a regular basis. Notifications are displayed in the Server
  151. Activity tab, and if you have **Show Desktop Notifications** enabled (General
  152. tab) you'll also see a systray notification.
  153. .. figure:: images/client12.png
  154. :alt: Activity window with notification.
  155. This also displays notifications sent to users by the ownCloud admin via the
  156. Announcements app.
  157. General Window
  158. --------------
  159. The General window has configuration options such as **Launch on System
  160. Startup**, **Use Monochrome Icons**, and **Show Desktop Notifications**. This
  161. is where you will find the **Edit Ignored Files** button, to launch the ignored
  162. files editor, and **Ask confirmation before downloading
  163. folders larger than [folder size]**.
  164. .. figure:: images/client-9.png
  165. :alt: General window contains configuration options.
  166. Using the Network Window
  167. ------------------------
  168. .. index:: proxy settings, SOCKS, bandwith, throttling, limiting
  169. The Network settings window enables you to define network proxy settings, and
  170. also to limit download and upload bandwidth.
  171. .. figure:: images/settings_network.png

  173. Using the Ignored Files Editor
  174. ------------------------------
  175. .. index:: ignored files, exclude files, pattern
  176. You might have some local files or directories that you do not want to backup
  177. and store on the server. To identify and exclude these files or directories, you
  178. can use the *Ignored Files Editor* (General tab.)
  179. .. figure:: images/ignored_files_editor.png
  180. For your convenience, the editor is pre-populated with a default list of
  181. typical
  182. ignore patterns. These patterns are contained in a system file (typically
  183. ``sync-exclude.lst``) located in the ownCloud Client application directory. You
  184. cannot modify these pre-populated patterns directly from the editor. However,
  185. if
  186. necessary, you can hover over any pattern in the list to show the path and
  187. filename associated with that pattern, locate the file, and edit the
  188. ``sync-exclude.lst`` file.
  189. .. note:: Modifying the global exclude definition file might render the client
  190. unusable or result in undesired behavior.
  191. Each line in the editor contains an ignore pattern string. When creating custom
  192. patterns, in addition to being able to use normal characters to define an
  193. ignore pattern, you can use wildcards characters for matching values. As an
  194. example, you can use an asterisk (``*``) to identify an arbitrary number of
  195. characters or a question mark (``?``) to identify a single character.
  196. Patterns that end with a slash character (``/``) are applied to only directory
  197. components of the path being checked.
  198. .. note:: Custom entries are currently not validated for syntactical
  199. correctness by the editor, so you will not see any warnings for bad
  200. syntax. If your synchronization does not work as you expected, check your
  201. syntax.
  202. Each pattern string in the list is preceded by a checkbox. When the check box
  203. contains a check mark, in addition to ignoring the file or directory component
  204. matched by the pattern, any matched files are also deemed "fleeting metadata"
  205. and removed by the client.
  206. In addition to excluding files and directories that use patterns defined in
  207. this list:
  208. - The ownCloud Client always excludes files containing characters that cannot
  209. be synchronized to other file systems.
  210. - Files are removed that cause individual errors three times during a
  211. synchronization. However, the client provides the option of retrying a
  212. synchronization three additional times on files that produce errors.
  213. For more detailed information see :ref:`ignored-files-label`.
