  1. Visual Tour
  2. ===========
  3. .. index:: visual tour, usage
  4. Icon
  5. ----
  6. The ownCloud Client remains in the background and is visible
  7. as an icon in the system tray (Windows, KDE), status bar
  8. (MAC OS X), or notification area (Ubuntu).
  9. .. image:: images/icon.png
  10. Menu
  11. ----
  12. .. image:: images/menu.png
  13. A right click on the icon (left click on Ubuntu and Mac OS X)
  14. provides the following menu:
  15. * ``Open ownCloud in browser``: Opens the ownCloud web interface
  16. * ``Open folder 'ownCloud'``: Opens the local folder. If multiple
  17. sync targets have been defined, an entry will exist for each local folder.
  18. * **Disk space indicator**: Shows how much space is used on the server.
  19. * Operation indicator: Shows the status of the current sync process, or
  20. ``Up to date`` if server and client are in sync.
  21. * **Recent Changes**: shows the last six files modified by sync operations,
  22. and provides access to the Sync status, which lists all changes
  23. since the last restart of ownCloud Client.
  24. * ``Settings...``: provides access to the settings menu.
  25. * ``Help``: Opens a browser to display this help.
  26. * ``Log out``: Logs the client out of the server.
  27. * ``Quit ownCloud``: Quits ownCloud Client, ending a currently running
  28. sync run.
  29. Settings
  30. --------
  31. Account Settings
  32. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  33. .. index:: account settings, user, password, Server URL
  34. The ``Account Settings tab`` provides an executive summary about the synced
  35. folders in the account and gives the ability to modify them.
  36. Where:
  37. * ``Connected to <ownCloud instance> as <user>``: Indicates the ownCloud server
  38. which the client is syncing with and the user account on that server.
  39. * ``Add Folder Sync Connection...``: Provides the ability to add another folder to the sync
  40. (see ``Adding a folder sync connection``).
  41. * ``Pause/Resume``: Will pause the current sync or prevent the client from
  42. starting a new sync. Resume will resume the sync process.
  43. * ``Remove``: Will remove the selected folder from being synced. This is used,
  44. for instance, when there is a desire to sync only a few folders and not the
  45. root. First, remove the root from sync, then add the folders to sync as
  46. desired.
  47. * ``Storage Usage``: Provides further details on the storage utilization on the
  48. ownCloud server.
  49. * ``Edit Ignored Files``: Provides a list of files which will be ignored, i.e.,
  50. will not sync between the client and server. The ignored files editor allows
  51. adding patterns for files or directories that should be excluded from the
  52. sync process. Besides normal characters, wild cards may be used, an asterisk
  53. ‘*’ indicating multiple characters, or a question mark ‘?’ indicating a single
  54. character.
  55. * ``Modify Account``: Allows the user to change the ownCloud server being synced
  56. to. It brings up the Setting up an Account (see above) windows.

  59. Adding a Folder Sync Connection
  60. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  61. Adding a new sync is initiated by clicking ``Add Folder Sync Connection`` in
  62. the ``Account`` settings.
  63. ..note:: To add a folder, you must not already sync a folder that contains this
  64. folder. By default, the wizard sets up the root folder of the ownCloud
  65. server to sync all of your ownCloud account. In consequence, you will
  66. first need to remove this folder prior to specifying new syncs.
  67. .. image:: images/folderwizard_local.png
  68. :scale: 50 %
  69. The Directory and alias name must be unique.
  70. .. image:: images/folderwizard_remote.png
  71. :scale: 50 %
  72. Select the folder on the server to sync with. It is important to note that, a
  73. server folder can only sync to the client one time. So, in the above example,
  74. the sync is to the server root directory and thus it is not possible to select
  75. another folder under the root to sync.
  76. Activity
  77. ~~~~~~~~
  78. .. index:: activity, recent changes, sync activity
  79. The Activity window, which can be invoked either from the main menu (``Recent
  80. Changes -> Details…``) or the Activity tab on the left side of the settings
  81. window, provides an in-depth account of the recent sync activity. It will show
  82. files that have not been synced because they are on the ignored files list, or
  83. because they cannot be synced in a cross-platform manner due to containing
  84. special characters that cannot be stored on certain file systems.
  85. .. image:: images/settings_activity.png
  86. :scale: 50 %
  87. General
  88. ~~~~~~~
  89. .. index:: general settings, auto start, startup, desktop notifications
  90. The tab provides several useful options:
  91. .. image:: images/settings_general.png
  92. :scale: 50 %
  93. * ``Launch on System Startup``: This option is automatically activated
  94. once a user has conimaged his account. Un-checking the box will cause
  95. ownCloud client to not launch on startup for a particular user.
  96. * ``Show Desktop Nofications``: When checked, bubble notifications when
  97. a set of sync operations has been performed are provided.
  98. * ``Use Monochrome Icons``: Use less obtrusive icons. Especially useful
  99. on Mac OS X.
  100. * ``About``: provides information about authors as well as build conditions.
  101. This information is valuable when submitting a support request.
  102. Network
  103. ~~~~~~~
  104. .. index:: proxy settings, SOCKS, bandwith, throttling, limiting
  105. This tab consolidates ``Proxy Settings`` and ``Bandwith Limiting``:
  106. .. image:: images/settings_network.png
  107. :scale: 50 %
  108. Proxy Settings
  109. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  110. * ``No Proxy``: Check this if ownCloud Client should circumvent the default
  111. proxy conimaged on the system.
  112. * ``Use system proxy``: Default, will follow the systems proxy settings.
  113. On Linux, this will only pick up the value of the variable ``http_proxy``.
  114. * ``Specify proxy manually as``: Allows to specify custom proxy settings.
  115. If you require to go through a HTTP(S) proxy server such as Squid or Microsoft
  116. Forefront TMG, pick ``HTTP(S)``. ``SOCKSv5`` on the other hand is particularly
  117. useful in special company LAN setups, or in combination with the OpenSSH
  118. dynamic application level forwarding feature (see ``ssh -D``).
  119. * ``Host``: Enter the host name or IP address of your proxy server, followed
  120. by the port number. HTTP proxies usually listen on Ports 8080 (default) or
  121. 3128. SOCKS server usually listen on port 1080.
  122. * ``Proxy Server requires authentication``: Should be checked if the proxy
  123. server does not allow anonymous usage. If checked, a username and password
  124. must be provided.
  125. Bandwidth Limiting
  126. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  127. The Download Bandwidth can be either unlimited (default) or limited to a
  128. custom value. This is the bandwidth available for data flowing from the
  129. ownCloud Server to the client.
  130. The Upload Bandwidth, the bandwidth available or data flowing from the
  131. ownCloud client to the server, has an additional option to limit automatically.
  132. When this option is checked, the ownCloud client will surrender available
  133. bandwidth to other applications. Use this option if there are issues with
  134. real time communication in conjunction with the ownCloud Client.
  135. .. _ignoredFilesEditor-label:
  136. The Ignored Files Editor
  137. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  138. .. index:: ignored files, exclude files, pattern
  139. ownCloud Client has the ability to exclude files from the sync process.
  140. The ignored files editor allows editing of custom patterns for files or
  141. directories that should be excluded from the sync process.
  142. There is a system wide list of default ignore patterns. These global defaults
  143. cannot be directly modified within the editor. Hovering with the mouse will
  144. reveal the location of the global exclude definition file.
  145. .. image:: images/ignored_files_editor.png
  146. :scale: 50%
  147. Each line contains an ignore pattern string. Next to normal characters,
  148. wildcards can be used to match an arbitrary number of characters, designated
  149. by an asterisk (``*``) or a single character, designated by a question mark
  150. (``?``). If a pattern ends with a slash character (``/``) the pattern is only
  151. applied to directory components of the path to check.
  152. If the checkbox is checked for a pattern in the editor it means that files
  153. which are matched by this pattern are fleeting metadata which the client will
  154. *remove*.
  155. .. note:: Modifying the global exclude definition file might render the
  156. client unusable or cause undesired behavior.
  157. .. note:: Custom entries are currently not validated for syntactical
  158. correctness by the editor, but might fail to load correctly.
  159. In addition to this list, ownCloud Client always excludes files with
  160. characters that cannot be synced to other file systems.
  161. With version 1.5.0 it also ignores files that caused individual errors
  162. while syncing for a three times. These are listed in the activity view.
  163. There also is a button to retry the sync for another three times.
  164. For more detailed information see :ref:`ignored-files-label`.
