  1. Updating ownCloud
  2. =================
  3. Update
  4. ------
  5. Update is to bring an ownCloud instance to its latest *point release*, e.g.
  6. ownCloud 4.0.6 → 4.0.7.To update an ownCloud installation manually, follow
  7. those steps:
  8. 1. Do a backup.
  9. 2. Unpack the release tarball in the owncloud directory, i.e. copy all new
  10. files into the ownCloud installation.
  11. 3. Make sure that the file permissions are correct.
  12. 4. With the next page request the update procedures will run.
  13. 5. If you installed ownCloud from a repository, your package management
  14. should take care of it.
  15. Upgrade
  16. -------
  17. Upgrade is to bring an ownCloud instance to a new *major release*, e.g.
  18. ownCloud 4.0.7 → 4.5.0. Always do backups anyway.
  19. To upgrade ownCloud, follow those steps:
  20. 1. Make sure that you ran the latest point release of the major ownCloud
  21. version, e.g. 4.0.7 in the 4.0 series. If not, update to that version first
  22. (see above).
  23. 2. Do a backup.
  24. 3. Deactivate all third party applications.
  25. 4. Delete everything from your ownCloud installation directory, except data and
  26. config.
  27. 5. Unpack the release tarball in the owncloud directory (or copy the
  28. files thereto).
  29. 6. Make sure that the file permissions are correct.
  30. 7. With the next page request the update procedures will run.
  31. 8. If you had 3rd party applications, check if they provide versions compatible
  32. with the new release.
  33. If so, install and enable them, update procedures will run if needed. 9. If
  34. you installed ownCloud from a repository, your package management should take
  35. care of it. Probably you will need to look for compatible third party
  36. applications yourself. Always do backups anyway.
