  4. .. index:: visual tour, usage
  5. Icon
  6. ----
  7. The Nextcloud Client remains in the background and is visible
  8. as an icon in the system tray (Windows, KDE), status bar
  9. (macOS), or notification area (Ubuntu).
  10. .. image:: images/icon.png
  11. :alt: desktop client icon
  12. Menu
  13. ----
  14. .. image:: images/traymenu.png
  15. A right click on the icon provides the following menu:
  16. * ``Open main dialog``: Opens the main dialog.
  17. * ``Pause sync``: Pauses the synchronization.
  18. * ``Settings``: Provides access to the settings menu.
  19. * ``Exit Nextcloud``: Quits Nextcloud Client, ending a currently running
  20. sync run.
  21. .. NOTE::
  22. This menu is not available on macOS.
  23. Settings
  24. ~~~~~~~~
  25. Account Settings
  26. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  27. .. index:: account settings, user, password, Server URL
  28. The ``Account Settings tab`` provides an executive summary about the synced
  29. folders in the account and gives the ability to modify them.
  30. Where:
  31. * ``Connected to <Nextcloud instance> as <user>``: Indicates the Nextcloud server
  32. which the client is syncing with and the user account on that server.
  33. * If the End-to-End encryption app is installed, then the current used
  34. passphrase can be shown with clicking on ``Display mnemonic``.
  35. Clicking on the tree dot menu or doing a right click on the folder
  36. opens up a context menu with the following options:
  37. * ``Open folder``: Opens the folder in the file explorer which the
  38. operating system provides. In example on Windows it will open the Windows Explorer.
  39. * ``Create new folder``: Creates a new folder.
  40. * ``Force sync now``: Forces a synchronization run.
  41. * ``Availability``: This entry is only available if the folder uses the
  42. virtual files feature. The files in the folder can be either made
  43. available offline with ``Make always available locally`` or if disk
  44. space needs to be saved, they can be turned into placeholder files
  45. with ``Free up local space``. ``Free up local space`` will not
  46. delete any files.
  47. * ``Add folder sync connection``: Provides the ability to add another folder to the sync
  48. (see ``Adding a folder sync connection``).
  49. * ``Pause sync/Resume sync``: Will pause the current sync or prevent the client from
  50. starting a new sync. Resume will resume the sync process.
  51. * ``Remove folder sync connection``: Will remove the selected folder from being synced. This is used,
  52. for instance, when there is a desire to sync only a few folders and not the
  53. root. First, remove the root from sync, then add the folders to sync as
  54. desired.
  55. * ``Edit Ignored Files``: Provides a list of files which will be ignored, i.e.,
  56. will not sync between the client and server. The ignored files editor allows
  57. adding patterns for files or directories that should be excluded from the
  58. sync process. Besides normal characters, wild cards may be used, an asterisk
  59. ‘*’ indicating multiple characters, or a question mark ‘?’ indicating a single
  60. character.
  61. * ``Enable virtual file support/Disable virtual file support``: Enable
  62. or disable virtual file support for this folder.
  63. .. image:: images/settingsdialog.png
  64. Adding a Folder Sync Connection
  65. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  66. Adding a new sync is initiated by clicking ``Add Folder Sync Connection`` in
  67. the ``Account`` settings.
  68. .. image:: images/folderwizard_local.png
  69. The Directory and alias name must be unique.
  70. Then select the folder on the server to sync with. It is important to note that, a
  71. server folder can only sync to the client one time. So, in the above example,
  72. the sync is to the server root directory and thus it is not possible to select
  73. another folder under the root to sync.
  74. .. image:: images/folderwizard_remote.png
  75. General
  76. ~~~~~~~
  77. .. index:: general settings, auto start, startup, desktop notifications
  78. The tab provides several useful options:
  79. .. image:: images/settings_general.png
  80. * ``Launch on System Startup``: This option is automatically activated
  81. once a user has conimaged his account. Un-checking the box will cause
  82. Nextcloud client to not launch on startup for a particular user.
  83. * ``Show Desktop Nofications``: When checked, bubble notifications when
  84. a set of sync operations has been performed are provided.
  85. * ``Use Monochrome Icons``: Use less obtrusive icons. Especially useful
  86. on macOS.
  87. * ``About``: provides information about authors as well as build conditions.
  88. This information is valuable when submitting a support request.
  89. Network
  90. ~~~~~~~
  91. .. index:: proxy settings, SOCKS, bandwith, throttling, limiting
  92. This tab consolidates ``Proxy Settings`` and ``Bandwith Limiting``:
  93. .. image:: images/settings_network.png
  94. :scale: 50 %
  95. Proxy Settings
  96. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  97. * ``No Proxy``: Check this if Nextcloud Client should circumvent the default
  98. proxy conimaged on the system.
  99. * ``Use system proxy``: Default, will follow the systems proxy settings.
  100. On Linux, this will only pick up the value of the variable ``http_proxy``.
  101. * ``Specify proxy manually as``: Allows to specify custom proxy settings.
  102. If you require to go through a HTTP(S) proxy server such as Squid or Microsoft
  103. Forefront TMG, pick ``HTTP(S)``. ``SOCKSv5`` on the other hand is particularly
  104. useful in special company LAN setups, or in combination with the OpenSSH
  105. dynamic application level forwarding feature (see ``ssh -D``).
  106. * ``Host``: Enter the host name or IP address of your proxy server, followed
  107. by the port number. HTTP proxies usually listen on Ports 8080 (default) or
  108. 3128. SOCKS server usually listen on port 1080.
  109. * ``Proxy Server requires authentication``: Should be checked if the proxy
  110. server does not allow anonymous usage. If checked, a username and password
  111. must be provided.
  112. Bandwidth Limiting
  113. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  114. The Download Bandwidth can be either unlimited (default) or limited to a
  115. custom value. This is the bandwidth available for data flowing from the
  116. Nextcloud Server to the client.
  117. The Upload Bandwidth, the bandwidth available or data flowing from the
  118. Nextcloud client to the server, has an additional option to limit automatically.
  119. When this option is checked, the Nextcloud client will surrender available
  120. bandwidth to other applications. Use this option if there are issues with
  121. real time communication in conjunction with the Nextcloud Client.
  122. .. _ignoredFilesEditor-label:
  123. The Ignored Files Editor
  124. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  125. .. index:: ignored files, exclude files, pattern
  126. Nextcloud Client has the ability to exclude files from the sync process.
  127. The ignored files editor allows editing of custom patterns for files or
  128. directories that should be excluded from the sync process.
  129. There is a system wide list of default ignore patterns. These global defaults
  130. cannot be directly modified within the editor. Hovering with the mouse will
  131. reveal the location of the global exclude definition file.
  132. .. image:: images/ignored_files_editor.png
  133. :scale: 50%
  134. Each line contains an ignore pattern string. Next to normal characters,
  135. wildcards can be used to match an arbitrary number of characters, designated
  136. by an asterisk (``*``) or a single character, designated by a question mark
  137. (``?``). If a pattern ends with a slash character (``/``) the pattern is only
  138. applied to directory components of the path to check.
  139. If the checkbox is checked for a pattern in the editor it means that files
  140. which are matched by this pattern are fleeting metadata which the client will
  141. *remove*.
  142. .. note:: Modifying the global exclude definition file might render the
  143. client unusable or cause undesired behavior.
  144. .. note:: Custom entries are currently not validated for syntactical
  145. correctness by the editor, but might fail to load correctly.
  146. In addition to this list, Nextcloud Client always excludes files with
  147. characters that cannot be synced to other file systems.
  148. With version 1.5.0 it also ignores files that caused individual errors
  149. while syncing for a three times. These are listed in the activity view.
  150. There also is a button to retry the sync for another three times.
  151. For more detailed information see :ref:`ignored-files-label`.
  152. Main dialog

  174. User Status
  175. ~~~~~~~~~~~
  176. User status is displayed in the Nextcloud desktop client's tray window.
  177. Default user status is always "Online" if no other status is available from the server-side.
  178. .. image:: images/status_feature_example.png
  179. :alt: User Status feature in the tray window
  180. When clicking on ``Set status`` you can edit the emoji, message and the timer to clear your user status:
